Northwestern Announces 2016 Men's Soccer Schedule

6/30/2016 3:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's soccer coach Tim Lenahan has announced the program's 2016 schedule, which features ten home games at the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium and seven contests against 2015 NCAA Tournament teams.

Lenahan will take his club to Pomona, N.J. for three exhibition games to begin the campaign. The Wildcats will face South Jersey Select (Aug. 13), Colgate (Aug. 16) and St. John's (Aug. 19) on the preseason trip.

After playing its 2015 home schedule away from the lakefront, Northwestern will open up this year's regular season slate with a three-game homestand at the new Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.

On Friday, Aug. 26, Northwestern will welcome Florida Gulf Coast to its home turf for the first-ever men's soccer game at the new lakefront complex. A pregame ceremony is planned to honor and recognize the momentous event before the Wildcats and Eagles kickoff at 7 p.m. FGCU enters the 2016 season after capturing its sixth-straight Atlantic Sun title last fall.

The homestand will continue for Northwestern when it hosts a pair of 2015 NCAA Tournament qualifiers in Santa Clara and Denver on Aug. 29 and Friday, Sept. 2. The Broncos tallied 11 wins in 2015 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, while the Pioneers compiled a 15-1-3 season with their only defeat coming in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Northwestern's game against Denver will be televised to a national audience on the Big Ten Network. It will be the first of two home games broadcast on the network.

The Wildcats will then make a 90-mile trip north for their first road game of the season when they meet Marquette at 7 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Valley Fields. Northwestern and Marquette last met in the 2012 season when the Wildcats took a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

Big Ten Conference play begin for the 'Cats with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 9 for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Ohio State. NU topped the Buckeyes, 2-1, last season at Toyota Park.

Northwestern's second nationally televised game will come on Sept. 14, when the Wildcats host Wisconsin on the Big Ten Network at 8 p.m.

Following a road trip to Indiana on Sept. 18, Northwestern will return home to Martin Stadium for another three-game homestand against DePaul (Sept. 21), Michigan (Sept. 25) and Maryland (Sept. 30).

The Wildcats will then step back out of conference play to open the month of October with a trip to UCF on Oct. 5 and home game against cross-town foe UIC on Oct. 11.

Following the non-conference tilts, Northwestern will meet Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J., on Friday, Oct. 14 before taking on Notre Dame in a neutral site game at Toyota Park on Sept. 18 at 7 pm.

The Wildcats will close out the road portion of their season on Oct. 22 when they face Michigan State for 2 p.m. match at the DeMartin Soccer Complex in East Lansing, Mich.

Home matches against Loyola (Oct. 26) and Penn State (Oct. 30) will finish off the regular season campaign for Northwestern.

The Big Ten Conference tournament will begin on Nov. 6 and run through Nov. 13.

Junior Elo Ozumba is Northwestern's returning points leader. The Houston, Texas, native came off the bench in every game last season and finished the year with six points on three goals. Sophomore Camden Buescher returns following his All-Big Ten Freshman Team campaign where he appeared in every match and recorded a goal and two assists.
