Northwestern Sweeps Purdue with 3-0 Win in Series Finale

Eight Northwestern batters reached base and sophomore right-hander Tommy Bordignon (2-3) tossed 5.1 shutout innings as the 'Cats (13-34, 5-16 B1G) completed a weekend sweep of visiting Purdue (7-37, 2-19 B1G) with a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.
Bordignon, making his second career start, allowed four hits, struck out three and at one point retired eight in a row. He changed speeds effectively to keep the Boilermakers off balance and escaped first-and-third jams in the second and third innings.
Relievers Jake Stolley, Richard Fordon, Dan Kubiuk and Tyler Lass combined with Bordignon on a six-hit shutout, Northwestern's first of the season. The 'Cats completed an errorless series by playing clean defense behind their pitchers while coming up with a couple key plays in the field.
Joe Hoscheit led Northwestern with two hits, and each of the first six batters in the lineup reached base at least once.
Shane Bryant (0-4) made the start for the Boilermakers and allowed three runs on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Northwestern opened the scoring against Bryant in the second inning. Connor Lind and Jack Claeys hit back-to-back singles, and center fielder Jake Schieber came up clutch with a two-out knock up the middle to plate Lind.
The 'Cats doubled their lead in the third on Lind's bases-loaded groundout to third, which scored Zach Jones. The RBI was Lind's 20th of the season, making him the sixth Northwestern player to reach the mark.
From there, both teams traded scoreless frames until the eighth inning. Purdue's best shot came in the top half, when the Boilermakers loaded the bases with nobody out. Pinch hitter Daniel Sander hit a shallow fly ball to center field, where Schieber caught the ball and fired home in one motion. The throw reached catcher Mat Jones in plenty of time, and he applied the tag on Purdue's Kyle Wood to complete the double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Matt Hopfner smoked a one-out double to the leftfield wall, and Hoscheit padded the lead with an RBI single on the next at-bat. The 'Cats took a 3-0 lead into the ninth, where Lass finished the shutout and the series sweep.
Northwestern picks back up on Saturday, when the 'Cats host Cal in the first of a four-game weekend series. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Miller Park.
