EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern began its season-long seven-game homestand with a loss to California on Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
The loss sends Northwestern to 13-35 on the campaign, while the Golden Bears improve to 26-18 overall.
Reed Mason (3-7) made his 13th start of the season and went 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Danny Katz, Mack Rosman, Evan Schreiber and Justin Yoss each threw at least an inning of relief. Katz led the way collecting two of the staff's three strikeouts.
Ryan Mason (7-2) pitched a gem for the Golden Bears, going 6.0 scoreless innings and only allowing three hits, while striking out 10 batters.
Jake Schieber had two of Northwestern's three hits on the day, both of which were singles, while RJ Watters took a pitch through the right side to finish the day 1-for-3 with a single.
Training, 6-0, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Northwestern attempted to mount a two-out rally when Schieber singled through the left side and Waters reach base on a single to put runners on first and second. Mat Jones put the ball in play to third and hustled down the line, but his slide into first was not enough to prevent being called out, ending the rally attempt.
With the wind blowing out to center field, the Golden Bears were able to build their lead behind four homeruns, with Devin Pearson and Brett Cumberland each hitting a pair. Cal would score at least one run in every inning of the ballgame.
The Wildcats honored the careers of seniors Antonio Freschet, Zach Jones, Reed Mason, Evan Schrieber, Jake Stolley and RJ Watters before the game.
Northwestern and Cal will play a doubleheader tomorrow, May 15, beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Game two of the day will begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
