EVANSTON, Ill. — Reed Mason recorded his second straight quality start and struck out a season-high seven batters to lead Northwestern past Purdue, 7-3, in game one of the series Friday afternoon at Miller Park.
Mason (3-6) finished with the win after tossing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits.
The win improves Northwestern to 11-34 on the season and 3-16 in Big Ten play, while Purdue falls to 7-35 overall and 2-17 in conference action.
Gavin Downs (1-5) earned the loss after only throwing 1.2 innings and allowing six runs. Brian Ghiselli threw a season-high five innings of relief and struck out four.
On the offensive end for Northwestern, Joe Hoscheit (1-for-2) and Jake Schieber (1-for-3) both drove in two runs apiece, while Jack Dunn and Matt Hopfner each tallied two hits. Hopfner has had 22 multiple hit games.
Purdue took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when a Mason pitch got away from Mat Jones with runners on the corners and Alec Olund came across home plate.
The Boilermakers' lead was short lived. In the bottom half of the inning, Northwestern loaded the bases on a pair of singles from Dunn and Hopfner and a Hoscheit walk to set up Willie Bourbon, who walked on five pitches to score NU's first run and knot the game, 1-1.
Schieber singled through the right side in the next at-bat to score two runs and give Northwestern its first lead of the afternoon, 3-1.
The Wildcats doubled their lead in the second inning off three hits from the heart of the order. Dunn singled to begin the frame and scored from first base in the next at-bat when Zach Jones hit a double to the left center wall. Two batters later, Hosceit blasted a pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run to give Northwestern a 6-1 advantage.
The home run was Hoscheit's seventh of the season and 14th of his career.
Purdue cut into Northwestern's lead in the top of the third when Kyle Wood hit his team-leading 11th home run to bring the contest to 6-2.
Mason kept Purdue off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing, tossing four more scoreless innings
The #B1GCats picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh off Connor Lind's RBI single to left field that brought home Hopfner from second base to put Northwestern in front 7-2.
Jake Stolley entered from the bullpen to start the eighth inning and surrendered a leadoff single and an RBI triple before bearing down and getting three consecutive outs. Stolley went on to throw a 1-2-3 final inning.
Northwestern and Purdue will meet again tomorrow afternoon for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT and the Big Ten Network will broadcast the action.
