Northwestern Falls on 5-4 Walk-Off at UIC

5/4/2016 9:31:00 PM | Baseball

CHICAGO — With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of ninth, UIC's Brandon Gibis took a pitch back up the middle off Pete Hofman to give UIC a 5-4 walk-off win over Northwestern.

Northwestern was outhit by the Flames on the evening, 8-4. Matt Hopfner, Joe Hoscheit, Willie Bourbon and Ben Dickey each posted a single in the contest.

UIC got out of the gates fast scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Ricardo Rameriez and Alex Dee.

Ben Dickey got Northwestern into the run column in the top of the second when he hit a ground ball to shortstop with the bases loaded to score Jack Claeys from third and cut into UIC's lead, 2-1.

With runners on first and second and one away in the top of the third, Hoscheit ripped a shot through the left side to bring around Dunn and even the contest at 2-2. Connor Lind was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to load the bases for Bourbon, who took a pitch back up the middle to score a pair of runs and give Northwestern a 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats' lead did not last for long as the Flames tallied two runs on a pair of hits and a walk in the bottom half of the fourth inning to knot the contest at 4-4.

Pitching dominated the next three innings with neither team tallying a hit until Dickey singled up the middle to start the top of the eighth.

Northwestern's had a strong performance from its bullpen on the night as Cooper Wetherbee, Danny Katz, Jake Stolley and Tyler Lass combined to retire 12 consecutive batters from the fifth to eighth inning.

Richard Fordon retired four of the five batters he faced over 1.2 innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hofman hit two batters to put runners on with one away. After UIC successfully completed a double steal to take second and third base, Northwestern intentionally walked Rob Calabrese to load the bases.

Hofman drew a ground ball to third base in the next at-bat and Lind threw home to get the force. Gibis' single in the next at-bat gave the Flames their second walk-off win of the season.

Six Northwestern batters were hit by pitches.
