#B1GCats Advance, Kim Moves Into Top-15 At NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Led by a 2-under 70 from sophomore Hannah Kim, No. 7 Northwestern easily cleared the first cut at the 2016 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Sunday. The Wildcats will play a final 18-hole round Monday at Eugene Country Club, with 14 other schools, with eight spots in the match play portion of the event up for grabs.

Northwestern will tee off Monday's Round 4 at Eugene Country Club at 12:40 p.m. PT, paired with Oklahoma State and Arkansas. The Top-8 teams on the leaderboard at the end of the day will advance to the match play quarterfinals on Tuesday.
 


Kim opened her round with back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and No. 11, and added a third on the Par-5 No. 14. The reigning two-time Big Ten Player of the Year carded five total birdies and moved into a tie for 15th place, a spot she shares with freshman Stephanie Lau.
 
Lau provided the highlight of Northwestern's third round late in her day. After landing her second shot on the Par-5 No. 7 in a greenside bunker, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year holed her wedge for an eagle. The seventh hole at Eugene County Club has been hospitable to the Wildcats all weekend. The 'Cats quintet played No. 7 at 5-under on Sunday, and have six birdies and an eagle to go with eight pars there over the first three rounds.

Along with No. 7 Northwestern, the 15 teams to advance to the fourth-and-final round of stroke play on Monday afternoon include No. 2 Southern California, No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Duke, No. 13 Washington, No. 12 Stanford, No. 20 Oregon, No. 18 South Carolina, No. 15 Virginia, No. 10 Arizona, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 38 North Carolina, No. 1 Alabama and No. 16 Florida State.

This season marks the Wildcats fourth straight appearance in college golf's premier event. Northwestern earned a program-best 10th-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
 
All five Wildcats in the lineup this weekend earned 2016 All-Big Ten honors, with Komoto, Cho, Kim and Lau on the First Team, and Mao taking home Second Team recognition.
 
The 2016 Championships are the second year with the season's final event under the revised format. The 24-team field will play 54 holes of stroke play over the course of three days. The top 15 teams will then play one more round of stroke play on Monday, May 23. The top eight teams at the end of Monday's round will move into the match-play single elimination bracket. Tuesday will feature the quarterfinals and semifinals. The finals will be played Wednesday afternoon.
 
Golf Channel will provide unprecedented prime time coverage of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. Twelve and a half hours of live event programming will be shown starting on Monday, May 23 and concluding with the match play finals on Wednesday afternoon.
