Late Rally Lifts Northwestern to a 12-10 Win, Series Victory

5/20/2016 4:25:00 PM | Baseball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Northwestern scored eight runs in the seventh inning to overcome a five-run deficit and go on to beat Rutgers, 12-10, on Friday afternoon and claim a series victory.

Northwestern (15-38, 7-16 B1G) relied on timely hitting in the contest, with eight players combining to total 13 hits. Jack Dunn had a team-best three knocks, including a double and two RBIs, while Zach Jones, Connor Lind and Jake Schieber each recorded a pair of hits.

Both Lind and Schieber also tallied two RBIs.

The loss drops Rutgers to 26-28 on the campaign and 8-15 in Big Ten play.

Joe Schindler made his fifth start of the season and went 5.0 innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, while striking out two. Josh Davis (2-3) earned the win after he entered in the sixth and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.

Northwestern scored a run in each of the first two innings, but Rutgers would answer each time plating three in the first and one in the bottom of the second to build a 4-2 lead.

The Scarlet Knights added to their total in the bottom of the fifth with a run and scored two more in the sixth to eventually take a 7-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Northwestern loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a Z. Jones single. Joe Hoscheit drew a walk on six pitches to bring Schieber home from third, before Lind took a pitch back up the middle in the next at-bat to score two more runs and make it a 7-5 ballgame.

The rally continued as Jack Claeys and Willie Bourbon had consecutive RBI singles to knot the game at 7-7. Ben Dickey was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to again load the bases, this time for Schieber, who hit a two-RBI single to right field to give the #B1GCats their first lead of the game, 9-7.

Dunn collected his first RBI of the day in the following at-bat to give Northwestern a 10-7 lead.

All eight runs in the seventh inning came with two outs.

The Wildcats received some insurance in the top of the ninth in form of RBI singles from both Dickey and Dunn.

Rutgers scored three runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough to come back and catch the 'Cats.

Pete Hofman, Tommy Bordignon and Tyler Lass all made relief appearances. Both Hofman and Bordignon recorded strikeouts.

SCHEDULE CHANGE: Due to an inclement forecast, tomorrow's game time has been moved up to 10 a.m. CT. Northwestern is looking for its second straight Big Ten sweep.
