PISCATAWAY, N.J. — In his final outing in a Northwestern uniform, senior Reed Mason pitched a gem of a ballgame, going 7.0 innings and only allowing three hits and one run, while striking out four to help Northwestern to a 5-1 victory over Rutgers in the series opener.
Northwestern's (14-38, 6-16 B1G) victory officially eliminated Rutgers (26-27, 8-14) from qualifying for next week's Big Ten Tournament.
Mason (4-7) was untouchable through the first five innings and ended up throwing 5.2 frames of no-hit ball before Gaby Rosa took a pitch back up the middle that scored Mike Martinez from second base, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. The single was Rutger's first hit of the game and cut into Northwestern's lead, 3-1.
The Scarlet Knights ended up getting two more knocks in the sixth. Mason would close out the sixth and seventh innings before giving way to Jake Stolley and Tyler Lass out of the bullpen.
Stolley went three up, three down in the bottom of the eighth, before Lass entered in the ninth to strike out a batter and eventually pick up the save. Neither Stolley nor Lass allowed a hit over the final two frames.
On the offensive end, Northwestern outhit the Scarlet Knights by a 10-3 margin.
The #B1GCats came out of the gates swinging as Zach Jones ripped a triple in the top of the first to set up Joe Hoscheit, who belted his eighth home run of the season in the next at bat to make it a quick 2-0 ballgame.
Rutgers kept the Wildcats off of the scoreboard in the second and third innings, but Northwestern plated another run in the top of the fourth when Connor Lind ripped a pitch down the left field line to score Hoscheit from first and give Northwestern a 3-0 lead. Lind strolled into second for his fourth double of the season and collected his 21st RBI.
Northwestern received some insurance in the top of the seventh when Jake Schieber hit a two-out, ground-rule double to get into scoring position and allow Mat Jones to come to the plate. With a 2-2 count, M. Jones reached for a pitch low in the zone and drove it over the left field fence to put Northwestern in front, 5-1. The blast was his second of the season.
Every member of Northwestern's line up reached base in the win and eight of the nine tallied at least one hit. Both Jack Dunn and Z. Jones finished with two hits apiece.
The Wildcats will be back at it tomorrow when they take on Rutgers in the second game of the series at 12 p.m. CT.
