EVANSTON, Ill. — Juniors Joe Hoscheit and Matt Hopfner each tallied an RBI in Northwestern's 13-2 loss to California in game two of a doubleheader Sunday at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
Northwestern (13-37) was led at the plate by freshman Willie Bourbon, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a walk, while California's (28-18) Brett Cumberland 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Tommy Bordignon (2-4) started for the Wildcats and plowed through the first inning unscathed. The Glenview, Illinois, native largely kept the Golden Bears' lineup in check, allowing just four earned runs on four hits and striking out four.
Joey Matulovich (1-1) got the start for the Golden Bears, throwing six innings of two-run ball, allowing three hits and three walks, while also striking out three.
Josh Davis relieved Bordignon in the fifth inning and put together a solid out of two scoreless innings with a strikeout. The book closed with Davis allowing four earned in 3.3 innings pitched.
The 'Cats posed a threat in the bottom of the sixth when Jack Dunn lead off the inning by beating out a infield single and Zach Jones ripped a double down the third base line. The #B1GCats then scored with consecutive sac-flies from Hopfner and Hoscheit, pulling to within 6-2.
Cal flashed their bats in the eighth however, scoring seven runs, including a Denis Karas three-run shot, to build a 13-2 lead.
The Wildcats host the Golden Bears for one final game tomorrow, Monday, May 16 at 3 p.m. CT. The game is Northwestern's final home contest at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park this season.
