EVANSTON, Ill. – Two Northwestern student-athletes, lacrosse player Emily Eichner and men's tennis player Mihir Kumar, have been awarded Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships, the conference announced Thursday.

Two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their educations were awarded a $7,500 scholarship based on their academic achievement.

Eichner is a three-time Academic All-Ten honoree and likely three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar who will graduate with a degree in biological science with a concentration in neurobiology and a minor in global health studies. The Rochester, N.Y. native traveled to Mexico City last summer as part of Northwestern's International Program Development Public Health in Mexico program and, after taking a gap year, plans to enroll in medical school in 2017.

A defender for the Wildcats, Eichner has appeared in 53 games and is in the midst of her best season, nearly doubling her career total in ground balls and posting a career-high in caused turnovers.

Kumar will graduate from Northwestern with an economics degree and will head to New York City to work at quantitative investment management firm AQR Capital. He plans to obtain an MBA in the near future.

He has been a four-year starter for the Wildcats and has won 65 doubles and 50 singles matches in his career. He is wrapping up one of the best doubles seasons in program history, ranking second in winning percentage and fourth in wins.

In order to be eligible, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work in a graduate degree program.

The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
