EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern takes aim at its 16th Big Ten tournament title in 18 years this week as it travels to East Lansing, Michigan, for this year's championship.

The Wildcats won 13 consecutive Big Ten tourney titles from 1998-2011 in addition to winning the crowns in 2013 and 2014. In her first 17 seasons as Northwestern's head coach, Claire Pollard has compiled a remarkable 48-2 record in Big Ten tournament play.

The tournament gets underway Thursday on the campus of Michigan State University, though the Wildcats have an opening-round bye as the field's No. 2 seed. Northwestern is set to open competition at 1 p.m. Central time Friday against the winner of Thursday's opening-round match between seventh-seeded Indiana and 10th-seeded Michigan State.

The semifinal round is set for Saturday with the championship match to be played on Sunday.

Northwestern (12-9 overall) returns to East Lansing for the second consecutive weekend after wrapping up a 10-1 Big Ten regular season with a 6-1 win over the Spartans last Sunday. The win at MSU follows an epic 4-3 win by the 'Cats over then-No. 10 Michigan at Combe Tennis Center on Friday. Redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp was recognized Tuesday as the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after posting a comeback singles win in the decisive match against the Wolverines. She also teamed with doubles partner Alex Chatt for two weekend wins as well as another singles win against Michigan State.

Lipp is No. 50 in this week's ITA national singles rankings and is No. 22 in doubles when pairing with Chatt. Sophomore Erin Larner is No. 102 in singles this week and holds a No. 54 doubles ranking when paired with Alicia Barnett.

Northwestern is ranked No. 30 in this week's ITA team rankings.
