'Cats Conclude Regular Season with 6-1 Win Over Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 39 Northwestern capped off a 10-1 Big Ten season Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Michigan State.
The trip to East Lansing was the first of two consecutive for the Wildcats as NU will return there for the Big Ten tournament which gets underway Thursday. Northwestern will be the No. 2 seed for the tournament and will open play at 1 p.m. Central time Friday against the winner of Thursday's match between seventh-seeded Indiana and 10th-seeded Michigan State.
Northwestern (12-9, 10-1 B1G) captured the doubles point on Sunday thanks to victories at Nos. 1 and 2. The No 2 pairing of Alicia Barnett and Brooke Rischbieth took down Emily Meyers and Emily Metcalf 6-3 before the 28th-ranked team of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp defeated 60th-ranked Allie Baer and Erin Faulkner 7-5 at the top spot in the lineup, giving the 'Cats a 1-0 lead in the match.
Northwestern would go on to post all five of its victories in singles action in two sets, all in convincing fashion. Barnett dominated her match with Davina Nguyen, surrendering only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win. Rischbieth ran the Wildcats' lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Meyers before 88th-ranked Erin Larner clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Faulkner.
NU wrapped up the win with victories by Alex Chatt at No. 4 (6-0, 6-3 over Metcalf) and 60th-ranked Lipp at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2 over Lexi Baylis). The Spartans avoided the shutout by getting a three-set superbreaker win by Athena Trouillot at No. 5.
