Minnesota's Dominant Pitching Sinks Northwestern, 10-1

4/23/2016 5:27:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — Freshman Ben Dickey reached base twice and scored a run, as Northwestern fell to No. 25 Minnesota, 10-1, Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.

The loss drops Northwestern to 10-29 (2-12 B1G), while Minnesota improves to 24-11 (8-2 B1G) on the season.

Dan Kubiuk (0-5) started for Northwestern and earned the loss after allowing five runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Minnesota's Dalton Sawyer (5-4) threw seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits, while also recording a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Freshman Willie Bourbon was the lone Wildcat to post multiple hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Junior Joe Hoscheit's 11-game hit streak came to an end with an 0-for-3 day at the dish.

The Golden Gophers got on the board in the first frame, stringing together hits to the tune of four runs, before adding additional runs in the third and fourth innings to go ahead 6-0.

Cooper Wetherbee and Justin Yoss each made strong relief appearances for the Wildcats. Wetherbee threw 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while Yoss struck out a batter in 1.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Northwestern got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Dickey ripped a two-out single and Grant Peikert brought him home two batters later. Jake Schieber then walked to load the bases, but Jack Dunn's knock to left field couldn't find the turf, ending the threat.

After coming out of the bullpen in the seventh inning, freshman Danny Katz pitched the last three frames and only allowed two earned runs on four hits, while fanning three batters.

The Wildcats finish off the series with the Gophers tomorrow, Sunday, April 24, with a 1 p.m. game at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
