As part of its monthly Getting to Know segment with members of the Northwestern fencing team, NUsports.com caught up with Alex Kain. The junior won 22 bouts this season and helped the Wildcats to the Midwest Conference title.

NUsports.com: Why did you choose Northwestern?

Alex Kain: "I chose Northwestern because of the ability to both fence on a top-five team and receive an unparalleled education."

What was the biggest change you experienced when moving from California to Evanston?

"The biggest change has probably been the weather. It's hard to beat the California sunshine."

You were a regular contributor this season. Overall thoughts on your junior year?

"It was a very transitional year for me. The switch from foil to epee has been challenging, but I was really able to settle into my own as an epeeist this season."

How did you get into fencing?

"When I was in middle school one of my friends fenced and said a girl could never beat him. I have been fencing ever since!"

What are some of your hobbies outside of fencing?

"You can usually find me traveling, baking or watching old movies."

Where is your favorite place on campus?

"The lakefill!"

What is something people might not know about you that they should?

"I'm first generation American."

What is your favorite thing about fencing?

"I love that fencing is just as much cognitive as it is physical. Whether you're tall or short, fast or slow, there are ways for you to take advantage of it, and ways for others to take advantage of you."

What are your goals for your senior year?

"We won Midwest Conference Championships this year which was a huge achievement. I think we're all looking forward to walking away with rings again next year."

What are your career / future plans?

"I'm not sure what my plans are yet. I spent last summer at a consulting firm and am spending this summer at a private equity firm, so we'll see where it takes me!"
