Northwestern's Rally Falls Short to No. 25 Minnesota

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's rally came up just short against No. 25 Minnesota on Friday afternoon as the team came back from five runs down only to fall by a run, 6-5.
The Wildcats move to 10-28 on the season and 2-11 in Big Ten play, while the Golden Gophers improve to 23-11 overall and 7-2 in conference.
Matt Fiedler (6-2) earned the win after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing four runs on two hits. He struck out six batters on the afternoon. Jordan Jess picked up his sixth save of the campaign.
Reed Mason made his tenth start of the season and threw 5.0 innings for the 'Cats, with four earned runs and four strikeouts. Tommy Bordignon, Tyler Lass, Rich Fordon, and Joe Schindler all threw in relief and retired 11 of the last 14 batters faced.
Joe Hoscheit led the Wildcats at the plate with a 2-for-5 day that featured a single and a triple. Senior Zach Jones also racked up two hits in the contest, including a pair of RBIs.
Northwestern struck first in the contest when Joe Hoscheit cracked a stand-up triple off the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning, and Jack Claeys hit a sacrifice fly to center field two batters later to put the Wildcats in front, 1-0.
The Gophers then tied the score at 1-1 an inning later after Austin Athmann knocked in Fiedler from second. Connor Schaefbauer hit a solo home run to right field two innings later in the top half of the fifth to go ahead, 2-1.
Minnesota added another four runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-1. Toby Hanson had a two-run home run to right field, and Matt Stemper and Micah Coffey scored after hitting a double and triple, respectively.
The 'Cats rallied back with four runs in the seventh inning to bring the score to 6-5. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jack Dunn ripped a single to right field that brought home Connor Lind and Willie Bourbon.
Dunn moved to second on a passed ball before Z. Jones laced a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Dunn and JR Reimer.
Northwestern made its final charge in the bottom of the ninth, after Dunn and Matt Hopfner walked to put the tying run on second and the winning run on first. Hoscheit took a deep cut at a full-count, two outs fastball and popped out to the shortstop to end the game.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. as Chicago's Big Ten Team will try to even the series.
