EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Laurie Schiller has been named the 2016 Midwest Fencing Conference Coach of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.
The award is the 11th such honor for Schiller in his distinguished coaching career. He retired at the end of this season after 38 years at the helm for the Wildcats.
He ended his tenure with another outstanding season, leading the Wildcats to a 39-6 regular season record, a fourth Midwest Fencing Conference championship and a 17th straight top-10 finish at the NCAA championships.
The team's 39 wins were the most since the 2010-2011 season and the third-highest single-season total in Schiller's career. The team was ranked fifth nationally for the majority of the season and racked up nine wins against top-10 opponents.
In addition to the team's conference title, Schiller coached Alisha Gomez-Shah and Courtney Dumas to gold medals in their individual events. Schiller also continued his 26-year streak of top-three team finishes at the conference tournament.
Schiller's strong postseason continued at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, where seven fencers finished in the top-10. Northwestern sent four fencers to the NCAA Championships, and Courtney Dumas and Jen Yamin earned All-America honors.
Schiller ends his coaching career with 1,261 wins, the second highest mark in collegiate fencing history.
