EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 40 Northwestern takes its unbeaten Big Ten record on the road this weekend when it travels to Penn State on Friday and No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday. Friday's match gets underway at 3:30 p.m. Central time while Sunday's gets started at 11 a.m. CT.
The Wildcats enter play this weekend 7-0 in Big Ten play, the same mark as both Ohio State and Michigan.
Northwestern is coming off a pair of convincing home wins last weekend. The 'Cats shut out Purdue 7-0 last Friday before downing then-No. 68 Indiana 6-1 on Sunday. Sophomore Erin Larner was honored as the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the two victories. She paired with Jillian Rooney for two wins at No. 3 doubles and also went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, including notching a win over then-No. 90 Paula Gutierrez of Indiana.
Maddie Lipp is the Wildcats' top-ranked singles player this week, coming in at No. 58. Larner also moved up to a No. 82 national ranking this week. In doubles, the team of Lipp and Alex Chatt are No. 28 while Larner and Alicia Barnett are No. 51.
Penn State enters Friday's match with an 8-9 overall record, including a 4-3 mark in Big Ten play. The Nittany Lions defeated Nebraska, 5-2, and Iowa, 4-3, at home last weekend. Northwestern defeated Penn State, 4-3, in last year's meeting between the teams on Feb. 14 in Evanston.
Ohio State hosts Illinois on Friday prior to facing the Wildcats. The Buckeyes haven't surrendered a point to an opponent in Big Ten play to date. Francesca Di Lorenzo (3), Sandy Niehaus (74), Anna Sanford (103) and Olivia Sneed (107) all are ranked nationally in singles while the doubles teams of Sanford/Miho Kowase (7), Niehaus/Ferny Angeles Paz (39) and Kowase/Olivia Sneed (89) have national rankings. Ohio State won both meetings with the Wildcats a year ago: 6-1 on March 6 in Columbus and 4-1 on April 25 in Evanston in the Big Ten tournament.
