Getting to Know: Charlotte Sands

As the 2015-16 fencing season draws to a close, NUsports.com sat down with senior Charlotte Sands to reflect back on her Northwestern career.
NUsports.com: Why did you choose Northwestern?
Charlotte Sands: "I honestly fell in love. When I walked around campus for the first time I felt like I was home. Being a part of the athletic community has only reinforced that feeling of family."
What was the biggest change you experienced when moving from New York to Evanston?
"There are no good bagels."
What do you reflect back on now that your senior season is wrapping up?
"That this was an incredible and unique experience. I've had the opportunity to meet so many interesting people and learn from them."
How did you get into fencing?
"There was an afterschool program at my lower school. I was actually too young to participate, but I would sit there and watch my older brother do it. Eventually, I found my fencing club, formed an incredible relationship with my coaches and fell in love with the sport."
What are some of your hobbies outside of fencing?
"Baking, reading, crafting… lots of grandma things."
What is your favorite thing about fencing?
"It has both physical and mental aspects. This makes it more exciting because, for example, just because you are faster does not mean you will win."
Describe how you got involved with Fuel Up to Play 60 and what that experience has been like for you.
"I got involved with Fuel Up to Play 60 my freshman year through Maureen Palchak (Assistant AD for Community Relations). She pointed me to a lot of different volunteering opportunities and Fuel Up just clicked with me. It is inspiring to see the impact that student-athletes have on the healthy habits of the students. In addition, I have had the opportunity to help expand the program to other universities, which allows Fuel Up to affect the lives of even more students."
What are your career / future plans?
"I'm very excited to join Oliver Wyman as a consultant in Chicago. I want to give Julie Hammer and Scott Koenning a huge thank you for all of their help."
