EVANSTON, Ill. — Freshman goalkeeper Mallory Weisse has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week following her performance against Colorado, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Weisse helped the Wildcats claim a 11-6 win at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium behind a career performance in the cage. After making just one save in the first half, Weisse stone walled the Buffs nine times in the final 30 minutes and corralled a season-high six ground balls.
It marked the third time this season the Westfield, New Jersey, native has made 10 stops and her six ground balls are the most by any NU player in a game this season.
She also made 10 saves against No. 10 Virginia on February 13 and No. 12 Louisville March 3.
Weisse is averaging 6.5 saves per game over her last four contests in which the 'Cats' are 3-1 and has 19 saves over the last two games against No. 4 North Carolina and Colorado.
The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 8 in the IWLCA poll and enter Big Ten play with an even 4-4 record. They open conference play this Thursday in front of a national audience on the Big Ten Network at No. 1 Maryland. Opening draw is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
