EVANSTON, Ill. -- Registration is open for the fifth-annual Run For Walk, a 4.1 mile run and 5K family walk, which will be held Sunday, July 31 to honor former head football coach Randy Walker. The race once again will finish on Ryan Field and has been named by the Chicago Area Runner's Association as a CARA Runners' Choice Circuit event for 2016.
For the past eight years -- the last four as the Run for Walk -- Northwestern fans, supporters and friends of the late Walker have assembled to honor him by taking part in one of his favorite hobbies -- walking around Evanston and the NU campus with his wife, Tammy, and their dog, Magic.
This year, the 5k family walk will continue and join the 4.1 mile run through Evanston's tree-lined streets before participants will finish on Ryan Field while watching their achievement on the video board. The unique run distance harkens back to Randy's uniform number 41 during his collegiate playing days at Miami University.
The registration fee for the run or walk is $37.50 (raises to $40 on July 1) and includes a short-sleeved technical shirt, a ticket to a nonconference home football game and entry into the race day expo. Northwestern students may register for $25.
As it did last year -- and back by popular demand -- Sodexo will provide a free pancake breakfast to all participants.
In addition, the event will feature the kids' races in and around Ryan Field. As part of the CARA Youth Circuit, kids can participate in age-group races 14 and under, finishing on the same field on which the Wildcats football players compete. Cost for the youth mile is $15 and also includes a football game ticket and t-shirt. Kids races are $10 and include a participation gift. CARA's inclusion of the Run for Walk in its highly regarded circuit is a result of the terrific feedback and the positive participant experiences from the past four years as a quality running event.
Share the news on social media that you are committed to participating in this year's event using #Run4Walk and make sure to tag Northwestern Athletics using #B1GCats. The race's Official Charitable Partner is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago.
Fans are encouraged to register online or visit NUsports.com/RunForWalk for more event details. Questions should be directed to runforwalk@northwestern.edu or by calling 847-467-3758.
