Ohio State Edges Northwestern on Walk-Off

3/27/2016 3:03:00 PM | Baseball

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State's Jacob Bosiokovic hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the ninth to give Northwestern a heartbreaking, 5-4, loss in the series finale at Bill Davis Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern (6-18, 1-2 B1G) led the entire game up to the final pitch. The Wildcats tallied 11 hits in the ballgame, all of which were singles. This was the 11th time this season that Northwestern has tallied 10-or-more hits in a game.

Pete Hofman (0-3) was the pitcher of record after giving up the walk-off home run. However, the junior right-hander was also the reason Northwestern was in a position to win the game.

Hofman entered in the eighth inning and pitched his way out of a jam by getting a two-out pop fly with the game-tying and go-ahead runs on second and third.

Ohio State's Seth Kinker (3-1) earned the victory to help move Ohio State to 14-7-1 (2-1 B1G) on the campaign.

Northwestern took the lead early by scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. After a Connor Lind walk and a Willie Bourbon single, Grant Peikert laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position.

RJ Watters singled in the next at-bat to bring home the game's first run, before Zach Jones hit into a ground out two batters later to score Bourbon, and eventually Watters on a throwing error.

Dan Kubiuk, who made his third start for Northwestern, kept the Buckeyes at bay for a majority of the game. Kubiuk pitched 5.2 innings and only surrendered four hits and two runs.

Ohio State scored its first two runs of the game on solo home runs in the third and sixth innings.

With the Wildcats leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, Northwestern extended its lead to 4-2 after Grant Peikert singled and stole second to move into scoring position for Watters. Watters, the Gahanna, Ohio, native drove a pitch right back up the middle for his second hit and RBI of the game.

Northwestern's 6-7-8 portion of the lineup went 5-for-11 (.454) in the contest with two RBIs.

Matt Hopfner went 2-for-5 in the contest and recorded his 13th multi-hit game of the season.

After playing the first 24 games of the season on the road, Northwestern will christen its newly renovated Rocky and Berenice Miller Park this week. The Wildcats will play its home opener against Chicago State on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. CT, before hosting the grand opening weekend (April 1-3) against Michigan.
