Ohio State Beats Northwestern to Set Up Rubber Match on BTN

3/26/2016 5:28:00 PM | Baseball

COLUMBUS — Despite collecting 10 hits, Northwestern fell to Ohio State, 5-2, in the second game of the series at Bill Davis Stadium.

The loss sends Northwestern to 6-17 on the season and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while Ohio State improves 13-7-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Matt Hopfner (0-2) pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three, while allowing three runs. Hopfner stayed in the lineup throughout the game and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Adam Niemeyer (2-1) earned the victory after pitching seven innings and only allowing two runs, while Daulton Mosbarger picked up his first save of the season after working two innings.

Zach Jones ripped his second double of the series, and eighth of the season, down the left field line to get the day started for Northwestern. Hopfner singled in the next at-bat to bring Jones home and give the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats have scored in the top of the first inning in six of its last eight games.

Northwestern's lead did not last long as the Buckeyes would get a run in the bottom of the first on a Wildcat throwing error.

Ohio State built its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning, getting RBIs from Craig Nennig and Troy Montgomery.

Connor Lind, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the contest, brought the Wildcats back within a run in the top of the third when he singled up the middle to score Jack Dunn from third.

Ohio State added two insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

Richard Fordon got the Wildcats out of a jam in the bottom half of the sixth when he was summoned from the bullpen with runners on second and third and one away. Fordon worked the count to 2-2 on Ronnie Dawson before getting him to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning.

Northwestern recorded a leadoff single in five different innings.

The Big Ten Network will broadcast the rubber match between Northwestern and Ohio State tomorrow Sunday, March 27 at 11 a.m. CT. RHP Dan Kubiuk is slated to start for Northwestern.
