EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 36 Northwestern ventures to the state of Texas for a trio of matches over a six-day span, all against ranked opponents. The Wildcats open their trip by taking on No. 66 Baylor at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Waco prior to facing 13th-ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock at 5 p.m. Friday. The road trip concludes Monday when the 'Cats face Texas in Austin at noon.
Northwestern (5-5, 3-0 Big Ten) is returning to action following a 17-day span between matches. The Wildcats are coming off a pair of convincing conference wins, defeating Rutgers 7-0 on March 4 and Maryland 6-1 two days later. After a rough start against a demanding schedule, NU has gotten back on track by winning its last four matches.
The three non-conference matchups in Texas are the last for Northwestern before it wraps up its regular season with eight consecutive matches against Big Ten foes.
Redshirt sophomore Maddie Lipp is the Wildcats' top-ranked individual, coming in at No. 40 in this week's ITA rankings. Sophomore Erin Larner also earned a singles ranking of No. 81 this week. Both players are also members of ranked doubles teams. Lipp pairs with sophomore Alex Chatt for a No. 20 national ranking while Larner teams with senior Alicia Barnett for a No. 40 standing.
Baylor (5-11) host Prairie View A&M at 10 a.m. Wednesday prior to its match against NU seven hours later. The Bears have one ranked doubles team as the duo of Blair Shankle and Kiah Generette come in at No. 15 this week. The Wildcats dropped a 5-1 decision in a matchup between the teams in Evanston last season when Baylor was ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Wildcats trail the all-time series between the schools, 5-3.
Texas Tech (13-2) are coming off a 4-0 loss to then-No. 67 TCU in its Big 12 opener last Saturday. The Red Raiders have one ranked singles player in Romanian sophomore Gabriela Talaba who is No. 122 this week. In doubles play, Lynn Kiro and Alex Valenstein are ranked No. 41, right behind the Northwestern duo of Barnett and Larner. This will be the first meeting between the Wildcats and Texas Tech.
Texas (8-5) will be facing the Wildcats following a seven-day break from competition. The Longhorns posted a 4-0 win at Kansas State on Sunday, two days after dropping a 4-3 decision at Kansas. Texas is paced in singles play by senior Breaunna Addison who is ranked No. 12. Addison also teams with Danielle Wagland in doubles play to earn a No. 17 national ranking. Northwestern leads its all-time series with Texas, 11-5. NU defeated the Longhorns 6-1 on March 1 of last season in Evanston.
