ATLANTA — In a fitting end to a phenomenal freshman campaign, Olivia Rosendahl picked up NCAA All-American honors after finishing fourth from the platform at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
In remarkable come-from-behind fashion, Rosendahl qualified for the platform diving competition in the last day of the Championships. After her first two dives in the preliminaries, she was near the very bottom of the leaderboard. A remarkable 73.95-point performance on her third dive — the best of the round — put her on course for an eighth-place finish. Her last dive of the afternoon netted her 67.20 points, which was the third-best of the final round.
In the finals session, Rosendahl put together a similar performance. After a relatively slow start, she dazzled with her 73.95-point Back 2 1/2 Somersault Pike in the third round. She also finished off strong with her last dive as she was awarded 74.20 points. She finished in fourth place.
Rosendahl was the only freshman in the platform diving competition. Her top-eight performance earned her NCAA First Team All-American honors and she became the first Northwestern diver to receive the nod — and the first in any event since 2012.
She has been no stranger to success from the platform. At the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana, she turned in a first-place performance. She has also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials from the platform — both individually and in the synchronized competition.
The four-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week also qualified for the 1-meter competition at the NCAA Championships. Her performance in the preliminaries was led by a 49.20-point dive, which was the seventh-best dive of any entrant in the third round. She wrapped up with a score of 279.20 and finished in 19th place.
This concludes a tremendous season for Rosendahl. During her first year in Evanston, she was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week, NU's first such award since 2011. She also broke a Norris Aquatics Center pool record from the 1-meter board that had previously stood for 15 years.
Rosendahl will participate in the USA Diving Synchronized National Championships on April 6-10 and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials from June 18-26.
