NEW YORK CITY – Northwestern wrapped up action in the first day of the 2016 NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden with junior Jason Tsirtsis still alive for a third-place finish.
The sixth-seeded Tsirtsis won his first round match by 7-1 decision over Alex Kocer of South Dakota State in the morning session Thursday to set up a match with No. 11 seed Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the nightcap. Collica won a controversial 3-2 decision after what appeared to be a Tsirtsis takedown with just seconds remaining was not granted. Northwestern was unable to challenge the call because it used one earlier in the match on an OSU takedown.
He will wrestle Laike Gardner from Lehigh tomorrow morning in the wrestlebacks bracket to try to work his way toward All-America status for the third consecutive year.
Two Northwestern seniors saw their careers come to a close Thursday in New York City. Dominick Malone and Jameson Oster were each eliminated after two losses.
Malone finishes his senior year with 23 wins at 133 lbs., 16 of which came by bonus point decisions. He was one of the nation's leaders in pins with eight wins by fall. He won 79 matches in his Wildcat career.
Oster wrapped up his career with 52 wins, including 12 this year at 141 lbs. He was the victim of some misfortune in his final match, as Nebraska's Anthony Abidin scored a four-point nearfall with fewer than five seconds left to secure a 12-9 win.
Session III of the NCAA Championships gets underway at 11 a.m. ET tomorrow.
