COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 11 fencers from the fifth-ranked Wildcats who traveled to Ohio State this past weekend had a strong showing at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, highlighted by Juliana Barrett's bronze medal.
The Regionals were a round robin tournament for the top fencers in the Midwest at each weapon group. Northwestern sent four student-athletes to compete in epee and foil and three to sabre.
In epee, Juliana Barrett led the way with a bronze medal and a 6-3 record to improve her season record to 62-23. Helen Foster finished fifth, Courtney Dumas finished sixth, and Mandeep Bhinder secured eighth place. Combined, the four fencers had an impressive 255-89 record this year.
Alisha Gomez-Shah, Cindy Oh, and Maddy Curzon finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively in the sabre competition. Gomez-Shah notched a team-high six victories to give herself a 62-15 record for the season. Together, the three fencers had a 190-81 record.
In foil, the largest of the three groups, Jen Yamin won ten matches en route to a group-high ninth place finish. Yvonne Chart was right behind her in tenth place, while Stephanie Chan was 12th and Charlotte Sanders was 15th. The four foil fencers collectively amassed a 209-136 record.
Northwestern will look to end its successful season with even more success on March 24 in Waltham, Mass., at the NCAA Championships. The event will be the last in head coach Laurie Schiller's distinguished 38-year career before he retires at the conclusion of the season.
