Northwestern Splits Contests with San Diego State

3/12/2016 7:32:00 PM | Baseball

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — After a rain delay that postponed the first game of Friday's doubleheader to Saturday, Northwestern baseball split contests with San Diego State to finish the weekend series.

Northwestern (5-11) captured the first game of the doubleheader, 13-7, but dropped the afternoon set to San Diego State (4-11) by a score of 15-10.

In the first contest, senior Reed Mason (2-0) was awarded the win after tossing 5.0 innings with nine hits, five runs and four strikeouts. Danny Katz and Tommy Bordignon both pitched in the contest for NU. Bordignon earned his second save of the season after throwing 4.0 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Freshman Willie Bourbon batted in five runs during the first game, which is a season-high for Northwestern and a career-high for the second baseman. Junior Jack Claeys knocked in a pair of runs as did classmate Matt Hopfner, who tallied his eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Despite jumping out to a four-run lead in the first inning of the second game, Northwestern fell to the Aztecs, 15-10. Josh Davis (0-3) earned the loss for Northwestern, while San Diego State's Adrian Orozco earned his first win of the campaign.

The Aztecs used a six-run fourth inning to separate from Northwestern and take an 8-5 lead. However, Northwestern did score four in the seventh inning to climb within a score of 12-10, but it would not last. San Diego State scored two in the bottom half of the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 15-10 lead.

Freshman Ben Dickey went 4-for-5 in the second game with an RBI. Senior Zach Jones tallied three hits, while Jake Schieber, Matt Hopfner, Willie Bourbon, and Jack Dunn all racked up two hits. Dunn had a career-best 3-RBI performance.

Northwestern will take the week off for finals and then begin its Spring Break trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on the Bearcats on Saturday, March 19.
