EVANSTON, Ill. — Sophomore attacker Selena Lasota and freshman goalkeeper Mallory Weisse were named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and the National Rookie of the Week Tuesday morning.
Lasota was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career after scoring five goals and dishing out one assist in the Wildcats' 11-8 win over No. 4 Duke. The 2015 Big Ten Freshman of the Year picked up right where she left off last season, scoring three goals in the first half to help the 'Cats build a 6-5 lead and added two more in the second half for her sixth career game with at least five goals. She finished the game with a career-high 13 shots on goal and also had four ground balls in the win.
The Campbell River, British Columbia native was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times last season in addition to her one offensive honor.
Making her collegiate debut as just the second freshman to start a season opener in program history, Weisse finished with eight saves, one ground ball and one caused turnover to earn National Rookie of the Week honors from Inside Lacrosse. She had four saves in each half and gave up just three goals over the last 43 minutes of the game to limit a Blue Devils squad that scored 20 goals in their season opener to just eight on Sunday.
The Wildcats moved up to No. 4 in the IWLCA poll following their victory over Duke and will be back in action this Saturday, Feb. 13 against No. 10 Virginia in Kennesaw, Georgia. Opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
