Wildcats Drop Nightcap to Pacific, 7-3

2/27/2016 11:16:00 PM | Baseball

STOCKTON, Calif. — Despite collecting nine hits, Northwestern fell, 7-3, in game two of its doubleheader against Pacific at Klein Family Field Saturday night.

Northwestern (3-4) falls below .500 for the first time all season with the loss, while Pacific improves to 2-5 with the victory.

Pete Hofman, who was credited with the loss for Northwestern, pitched 3.0 innings, only giving up three hits and a pair of runs. Jake Jenkins (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after going 6.0 innings with five strikeouts.

For the second consecutive game, Northwestern scored in the top of the first inning. Jack Dunn roped a single back up the middle and Zach Jones walked to get two runners on with two outs. After Dunn and Z. Jones got into scoring position by stealing third and second, respectively, Matt Hopfner singled through the left side to put Northwestern up, 2-0.

Dunn finished the game with a 3-for-5 performance at the dish.

Pacific scored in a run in the second, before posting a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead heading into the fifth.

Ben Dickey collected his second extra-base hit of the season in the sixth inning that brought home Willie Bourbon from second base to make it a 5-2 ball game, but that is as close as Northwestern would come to catching the Tigers.

Dickey was the only other Wildcat player to record multiple hits. The freshman outfielder finished the game 2-for-4.

Pacific chalked up insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings to go onto win the nightcap, 7-3.

The series finale will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. CT
