Wildcats Sweep Penn Duals

Philadelphia, Penn. – No. 5 ranked Northwestern swept the Penn Duals, going 5-0 with wins over top-ten ranked Penn and Temple.
Northwestern defeated Sacred Heart 21-6, with 7-2 wins in all three weapons groups. Yvonne Chart, Charlotte Sands, Mandeep Bhinder, and Sacha Bazzal all went 3-0.
The Wildcats then took on No. 8 ranked Penn and came away with a 17-10 victory. After dropping foil 4-5, the epee group won 7-2 before the saber group closed out 6-3. Juliana Barrett and Cindy Oh both finished 3-0.
Chicago's Big Ten Team dominated Drew 26-1 to improve its record to 3-0 on the meet. Eight different fencers finished with a perfect 3-0 record for the match.
NU continued its strong day with a 24-3 takedown of Haverford. The saber group finished 9-0 and six different fencers posted 3-0 records.
The Wildcats faced its toughest test of the meet with its last match against No. 10 Temple. After the foil group narrowly lost 4-5, the epee group won 5-4 after Juliana Barrett took home the last bout of the group. With the match tied at 8-8, the saber group traded bouts until it was 4-4 and 13-13 all. Maddy Curzon earned the victory in dramatic fashion, giving Northwestern a 14-13 win for the match and a clean sweep of the meet.
Charlotte Sands and Sacha Bazzal both had a perfect meet, going 9-0 in the foil group and saber group respectively.
Northwestern will be back in action again on Saturday, Feb. 27, for the two-day Midwest Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio, highlighted by a matchup against No. 6 Ohio State.
