Curzon Leads Northwestern at USA Junior Olympic Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Seven Northwestern fencers competed at the USA Junior Olympics Championships this weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, against the best young fencers from around the country.
Maddy Curzon led the Wildcats with a 30th place finish in the saber weapons group after she won two knockout matches. She finished 5-4 on the weekend.
Katie Van Riper and Ella Lombard represented Chicago's Big Ten Team in the epee weapons group. Van Riper had a solid 3-3 showing in group play that earned her a bye, but she lost her only knockout match.
Four Northwestern fencers competed in the foil weapons group. Sharon Chen went 4-1 and Michelle Lee went 4-2 in the group stage, but both lost in the knockout round after receiving first round byes. Stefani Kahookele went 3-3 in the group stage, while Lucia Procopio won a knockout match in the first round.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 21, when they travel to Philadelphia for the Penn Duals, where they will face two top-10 ranked teams in Penn and Temple.
