
No. 21 Northwestern Extends Winning Streak Over No. 49 Kentucky

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern fended off #49 Kentucky on Saturday, winning by a score of 6-1 and extending their winning streak to five matches.
Chicago's Big Ten Team improved their record to 8-1, while Kentucky fell to 6-2.
"The community came out to support today and it was unbelievable," said head coach Arvid Swan. "It definitely made a difference in the match."
Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer made quick work in No. 1 doubles, topping Kentucky's Kevin Lai and Nils Ellefsen, 6-3. Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire followed up that performance with a 6-4 decision at No. 2 to start NU off with a point.
Playing in the No. 6 singles position, Ben Vandixhorn registered the second point of the day with his efficient victory over Charles Minc, 6-3, 6-3.
In the only matchup with two ranked opponents, Northwestern prevailed. #14 Konrad Zieba topped #25 William Bushamuka with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to extend the Wildcat lead to 3-0.
After Kentucky picked up a point at No. 2 singles, Alp Horoz registered a victory over Kentucky's Trey Yates, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. His win clinched the victory for Northwestern.
In the No. 3 singles spot, #77 Strong Kirchheimer racked up another point for Northwestern, as he won 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Fedor Baev added yet another point for NU, extending the lead to 6-1. After losing the tiebreak 14-12 in the first set, the junior rebounded to win both the second and third sets.
The 'Cats are back in action on Friday, Feb. 19, as they play host to North Carolina State. It begins at 6 p.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.
