EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern closes out its home stand against Chicago State on Sunday, Dec. 4, for Autism Awareness Day.
The Northwestern's women's basketball team has a special connection with autism and since head coach Joe McKeown took over in 2008 the Wildcats have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the developmental disorder. One way to increase the knowledge of those in the Chicagoland area is to partner with Autism Speaks to host the annual Autism Awareness Game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. There will be a quiet room available in the arena and early-arriving fans will receive an exclusive event t-shirt.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
The Wildcats head into Sunday's matchup on a three-game winning streak with signature wins at home against No. 16 Florida and Virginia. Against Virginia on Thursday night, the Wildcats overcame an 18-point deficit and used an 19-0 run to take down the Cavaliers 69-60 in the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Nia Coffey posted a 29-point, 14-rebound double-double and added four assists, three steals and two blocks against Virginia. Coffey is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week and was named to the Naismith Award Watch List and the Wade Trophy Watch List this week. Coffey is nine boards shy of breaking the NU career rebounds record.
Northwestern is third in the country with 7.9 blocks per game and is also shooting 46.2 percent from the field this season.
Ashley Deary, who owns the top three NU single-season steals record, career record and Big Ten single season record, is just 36 steals shy of breaking the Big Ten career record. She is currently 25th in the country and first in the Big Ten in steals this season with 25.
Lydia Rohde has been on fire from beyond the arc this season, shooting 56.7% from three-point range. She is currently fifth in the country in three-point field goal percentage and fifth in the conference in made threes per game with 2.4.
The Wildcats are receiving votes in the AP Polls for the first time this year.
SCOUTING CHICAGO STATE
The Chicago State Cougars come to Evanston with an 0-7 record in search of their first win this season, coming off of a 88-53 loss to Ball State on Thursday. The Cougars are led by 6-2 forward Sh'Toya Sanders, who is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds a game and has posted four double-doubles this season. Sanders is third in the country with 4.1 blocks per game.
