SPOKANE, WASH. – Nia Coffey became the first player in Northwestern history with 1,000 career points and rebounds, but Northwestern fell down the stretch in a tough road environment at Gonzaga, 67-56.
Coffey came into the night needing 11 rebounds to become the first Wildcat to reach 1,000 in that category and ended up with 14. She is now just 87 points away from reaching the exclusive 2,000-1,000 club.
Coffey posted her 60th straight game in double figures, reaching the 10-point mark in the first 20 minutes.
She finished the night with 15 and was joined in double figures by Ashley Deary (13) and Christen Inman (13).
Deary had five steals on the night to bring her within 10 of the Big Ten career record. She also had six assists.
The Wildcats are 10-2 for the second straight season.
Northwestern led for nearly the entire game until Gonzaga took a 51-50 lead with just under five minutes to go in the game. The Wildcats went cold in the final frame, making three-of-15 shots. The Bulldogs outscored the 'Cats by 15 in the 4th quarter to erase what was a 48-44 Northwestern lead after three.
The Wildcats led the game for more than 28 minutes in front of 5,600 opposing fans.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns home on Thursday, Dec. 22, to take on UT-Martin in the final non-conference game. Tip is set for 2 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
