MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In a game that came down to the final seconds, Northwestern pulled out its fifth straight win, beating Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

Senior co-captain Nia Coffey led the Wildcats with 17 points, scoring in double figures for the 57th consecutive game to break a 30-year-old program record previously held by Anucha Browne. Fellow captains Ashley Deary and Christen Inman joined Coffey in double figures with 13 and 15 points, respectively.

Northwestern improved to 8-1 with the win.

The Wildcats and Panthers exchanged baskets in the early going as the first quarter saw the contest tied on four different occasions. NU held the advantage for most of the period, leading by as much as five with just over three minutes left to play. Milwaukee used a late 10-4 run to finish the first 10 minutes with a one-point lead.

Inman started the second period with a midrange jumper to push the 'Cats ahead, 17-16. The Panthers responded with a 9-2 surge to claim a five-point advantage, but Chicago's Big Ten Team closed out the frame with six straight points to take the lead into the halftime break.

The teams showcased back-and-forth action to start the third period, but Northwestern was able to string together consecutive shots to build a seven-point cushion with 3:56 left in the quarter. A Milwaukee layup snapped NU's run as the Panthers clawed back to prevent the 'Cats from extending their lead. UWM capped off the frame with a 3-pointer, but Northwestern took a 48-47 lead into the final quarter.

The Wildcats converted a pair of 3-point plays in the final minutes of the contest to lead by eight with 1:07 remaining in regulation. Milwaukee rattled off eight straight points in the final minute to level the game with 12 seconds left on the clock. Coffey drew a foul and drained a pair of free throws, and Milwaukee missed its final attempt as NU claimed its eighth win of the year.

Northwestern returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13, when it hosts crosstown rival UIC for its annual Field Trip Day. Tip off is set for 11 a.m. CST.
