Bloomington, Ind. — It took an overtime period to decide the result of No. 7 Northwestern and No. 2 Indiana's Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match Sunday afternoon.
Indiana's Trevor Swartz headed home a cross from Austin Panchot in the 91st minute to send the Hoosiers onto the next round of the conference tournament with a 1-0 overtime victory.
"We played as hard as we possibly could and left everything we had on the field," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "I am proud of how this group has grown in the last three weeks and we ended the season playing 'Northwestern Soccer.' Indiana has a great team and we push them to be their best. I am very proud of our six seniors who have all made an impact on the program."
Northwestern finishes its campaign 6-11-1 overall, while the No. 4-ranked Indiana team improves to 11-1-6.
Sunday's quarterfinal match was a fine display of defensive soccer as neither team could find the net in regulation.
Junior goalkeeper Francisco Tomasino tallied three saves in the effort and five #B1GCats recorded shots.
After an evenly matched first half, Northwestern's created its best opportunity just after the break in the 54th minute when Mike Roberge received a drop-off pass in the box and put a shot to the near post that just missed the net.
Indiana upped its attack in the latter stages of the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 8-4 in the period.
Tomasino made a game-saving play in the final minute of regulation when Indiana sent a cross into the box that missed its target and deflected off a NU defender and went towards net. Tomasino dove to his left to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Northwestern and Indiana have gone to overtime seven times in the last nine meetings between the two programs, including a scoreless draw during the regular season.
