Northwestern Finishes 2016 Season With Sweep at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Northwestern finished the 2016 season strong, reaching double-digit wins with a 3-0 sweep at Rutgers on Saturday night.
The Wildcats finish with 10 wins in the first year under head coach Shane Davis.
"The team grew and got better throughout the year," Davis said. "We are proud of how we finished the year by sending our seniors out with a win."
The Northwestern offense was rolling against the Scarlet Knights with six players registering kills and three hitting better than .300. The Wildcats hit .306 as a team, the best performance in conference play this year and the highest mark since hitting .320 against Virginia on Aug. 27.
Symone Abbott and Sofia Lavin each ended the night with nine kills to lead the way for the 'Cats. The senior Lavin hit .412, the third straight match she has hit .300 or better.
Abbott ends her junior year with a career high 459 kills. She stands at 1,216 after three seasons in Evanston, which ranks 13th on the all-time Northwestern leaderboard. Stephanie Holthus (2010-13) is first in program history with 1,797.
Kayla Morin added seven kills in her final match as a Wildcat. Maddie Slater had six, and Gabrielle Hazen had five.
Junior setter Taylor Tashima had 30 assists to finish the season with 1,008. She is at 3,044 for her career through three years, which ranks fifth all-time at Northwestern.
Chicago's Big Ten Team held Rutgers to just .193 hitting and recorded eight total blocks. Tashima, Hazen and Slater each had three total.
The Wildcats served six aces, led by two each for Tashima and Lavin. It was the 11th time this year the team has had five or more.
Northwestern won the first set handily, 25-17, after jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Rutgers kept the second and third sets close, but the Wildcats prevailed 25-23 in each to pick up their 10th win of the year.
The All-Big Ten, All-Region and All-America teams will be announced over the course of the next couple weeks.
