PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Mitch Sliga earned 2nd place at 184 lbs., highlighting a 7th place finish for Northwestern in the team standings at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.

"I am proud of how we competed today," head coach Matt Storniolo said. "This was a long road trip for a young team. We made a few mistakes in critical moments, but that is not terribly surprising for how young we are. We will learn from this experience and be better for it."

Three Northwestern wrestlers placed at the all-day tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at The Palestra. Jacob Berkowitz (3rd at 197) and Johnny Sebastian (6th at 174) joined Sliga on the podium.

Sliga came into the day as the No. 3 overall seed at his weight and dominated his way to the championship match. He started the tournament with a first-period fall over Chris Beck from VMI and followed that up with an 8-1 decision over Appalachian State's David Peters-Logue in the quarterfinals. Sliga then advanced to the finals with a 6-0 shutout of Alex DeCiantis from Drexel in the semifinals. No. 3 ranked Bo Nickal won the championship bout with a pin in the closing seconds.

"It was great to see Mitch back in the finals of a tournament," Storniolo said. "He is wrestling better every time he steps on the mat. It is great to see him enjoying himself."

Berkowitz secured a third place finish with a team high four wins on the day. He won his first two matches with a pair of decisions but then ran into No. 14 Matt McCutcheon of Penn State in the semifinals, losing 7-1. Berkowitz then won two matches in the consolations, including an 8-3 win over Joe Heyob of Penn in the third-place bout.

Sebastian looked good in his first varsity tournament, advancing to the semifinals before his first loss of the season. He won his first round match by fall in just 39 seconds and then earned a 20-5 tech fall in the Round of 16. He won his quarterfinal match with another pin, this time in 3:39. Sebastian dropped a 7-2 decision to Penn State's Shakur Rasheed in the semis and then withdrew from the event, which gave him the sixth-place finish.

A number of Wildcats narrowly missed placing, as the Keystone Classic only awarded team points through sixth place. Freshmen Anthony Rubinetti, Alec McKenna and Shayne Oster, sophomore Conan Jennings and senior Ben Sullivan all would have had a chance to wrestle for seventh if that match was in effect on Sunday with all five advancing to and then falling in the consolation round of four. The true freshman Oster was the closest to advancing to the consolation semis, losing a 9-7 decision to Nick Barber of Eastern Michigan.

Rubinetti (125), McKenna (141) and Oster (149) all made it to the quarterfinals at their respective weight classes before dropping matches to higher-seeded wrestlers and then competing in the consolation bracket.

10 Wildcats won matches on Sunday with eight winning multiple.

On the same day, a pair of Northwestern true freshman redshirts impressed at the Michigan State Open. Sebastian Rivera finished second at 125 lbs., dropping the championship match in a close 7-5 decision. He earned his spot in the finals with a tech fall and a major decision in the earlier rounds. Classmate Ryan Deakin placed third at 149 lbs. He lost in the quarterfinals but bounced back to win four in a row in the consolation bracket to earn his third place finish.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back to the dual part of the schedule when North Dakota State pays a visit to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Dec. 2. That match will begin at 7 p.m.
