'Cats Dance With Duke in Sweet 16 Sunday

DURHAM, N.C. – Following a 1-0 victory over SIUE in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Friday, the Northwestern women's soccer team (16-2-4) will face off against third-seeded Duke on Sunday in the Round of 16. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be aired live on ACC Network Extra.
The Wildcats head to the Sweet 16 for the second time in program history and the first time since 1998.
The 'Cats kicked off the tournament in dominating fashion, beating the Kent State Golden Flashes 3-0 last Saturday. Kayla Sharples put in the first goal off of a Marisa Viggiano corner in the 17th minute. Nandi Mehta scored a rocket of a penalty kick just two minutes later, and Kassidy Gorman added a final goal late in the game to seal the victory. Northwestern had another tremendous defensive showing, recording its 16th shutout on the season.
Northwestern's success continued into play in Durham, N.C., as Gorman registered the 'Cats lone goal against SIUE on Friday night. Once again, the NU defense made headlines, recording its NCAA-leading 17th shutout of the year.
Duke advanced to Sunday's matchup following a second-round win against Illinois State on Friday night. Sunday's game will mark the first meeting between the two squads.
