EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern women's swimming and diving sits in first place, while the #B1GCats' men's program holds steady in second, following the first day of the TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatics Center.

On the women's side Northwestern collected 305.5 points to pace the meet and the men tallied 296 and trail Michigan State by 60.5 points.

The day was headlined by a pair of NCAA B cuts for the 'Cats. Freshman Valerie Gruest Slowing swam a school and a pool record in the women's 500 free when she touched the wall in 4:40.58. The time is the sixth fastest in the country this season.

Melissa Postoll followed up that performance with a strong showing of her own by setting a school record in the 200 IM. Postoll's 2:06.07 time in the event earned her first place and an NCAA B cut.

The women's side bookended the day by taking the top spots in the 200 free relay (1:31.76) in the first event of the finals and then ended the finals session by winning the 400 yard medley relay (3:44.13). Mary Warren led off the 200-yard free relay by swimming her 50 yards in 22.74, which is a pool record.

Lindsay Adamski earned another first-place finish in the pool for the 'Cats by tying for the top spot in the 50 breast with a time of 29.23.

On the diving boards, Northwestern swept the day with Olivia Rosendahl winning the 3-meter event with a score of 336.70 and Andrew Cramer taking the 1-meter competition with a score of 323.65.

The men's side picked up a quick 34 points in the finals session when the 200 free relay team of Will Hofstadter, Gag Kohner, Almog Olshtein and Alex Snarski placed second with a time 1:21.53.

Hofstadter continued to have an impressive evening by finishing second overall in the 50 breast, touching the wall in 25.16.

Charlie Cole swam a season-best 4:29.21 in the 500 free earned 16 points for Northwestern with his third-place finish in the event.

Olshtein posted his fastest 50 free time of the season in Friday night's finals and just missed an NCAA B cut time when he took third place with a time of 20.43.

The evening came to a close with the men's 400-yard medley relay where Northwestern picked up 32 points in its third-place finish. Andy Jovanovic, Hofstadter, Ryan Tate and Olshtein teamed up to swim the event in 3:19.86.

Day two of the invitational will begin at 9 a.m. with preliminary races.
