
Wildcats Go Perfect 8-0 at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Northwestern swept the field at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., going a perfect 8-0 in duals throughout the day.
The No. 7 ranked Wildcats dominated their eight opponents and won by a collective score of 172-44. All 18 fencers that participated finished with records over .500, and 16 fencers had at least one perfect dual.
Chicago's Big Ten Team improved its record on the new season to 9-4.
Senior Cindy Oh and freshman Abby Tartell both finished with perfect 12-0 records. Freshman Amy Jia posted a 12-1 record, while junior Sacha Bazzal, senior Sarit Kapon and sophomore Maddy Curzon all went 11-1.
Junior Emine Yucel, freshman Adelle Berdichevsky, freshman Shirley Luong and senior Mandeep Bhinder also registered double-digits in the win column, going 10-2. Overall, 10 out of 18 Wildcats finished with at least 10 wins.
The future looked bright on Sunday with six freshmen competing in four matches each. Aahana Chatterjee and Alexandra Banin joined Tartell, Berdichevksy, Luong and Jia in tallying a resounding 59 wins for the Class of 2020.
Chatterjee, Jia, Luong and Tartell all made their collegiate debuts.
Moss used two different sets of fencers for each half of the day. The first set of 'Cats with five freshmen in the lineup rolled through the competition, defeating Queens, 24-3, Sacred Heart, 20-7, Fairleigh-Dickenson, 21-6 and Haverford, 26-1.
The second set of fencers continued the momentum into the afternoon, taking down Wellesley, 23-4, and Stevens Tech, 19-8. In the penultimate dual of the event, the Wildcats faced No. 10 ranked Cornell, and pulled out a tough 15-12 victory behind 3-0 performances from seasoned seniors Oh and Bhinder. The 'Cats ended the day with an emphatic 24-3 win over the hosts, Vassar.
The invitational concluded the 2016 dual season for Chicago's Big Ten Team. It will return to action with the USFA January North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio, from Jan. 6-9 in 2017.
