EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern senior Ashley Deary reached the 1,000 career point milestone, and Northwestern outlasted Oral Roberts, 64-55, Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Deary came into the day needing eight points to reach 1,000 for her career and surpassed the mark with a pair of free throws late in the second quarter. She finished the game with 11 and also added five assists and four steals.
Northwestern was led for the second straight time by senior Nia Coffey, who recorded her 42nd career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, her 52nd straight time scoring in double figures.
Four Wildcats ended up with double digits, as Christen Inman and Lydia Rohde each scored 11 to join Coffey and Deary. Rohde was a perfect 4-4 from the field and Inman collected seven rebounds.
Chicago's Big Ten Team made it count from the free throw line, knocking down 18-of-22 from the stripe. The 'Cats shot 82 percent compared to the Golden Eagles' 64.
Northwestern played tenacious defense all afternoon, recording 11 blocks and six steals. Lauren Douglas had six blocks to tie her career high, while Coffey and freshman Abbie Wolf added two.
Freshman Abi Scheid recorded her first points as a Wildcat with two free throws and an easy bucket from the post midway through the second quarter to end up with four.
The Wildcats started the game on a tear with three-pointers from Coffey, Rohde and Inman to build an early 19-5 lead. Deary made nine free throws in the second quarter alone to give Northwestern a 36-27 lead at the half.
The Wildcats outscored the Golden Eagles 14-11 in the third quarter to take a 50-41 lead into the final frame.
Northwestern put the game away down the stretch in the fourth quarter with back-to-back clutch three pointers from Coffey and Rohde to extend the lead to nine.
Despite the close score, the 'Cats led wire-to-wire.
Northwestern is right back at it Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when Missouri State pays a visit to Welsh-Ryan Arena.
