Northwestern Wins Season Opener Over Hampton, 67-48

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern sprang to life late in the first half, and the Wildcats coasted to a 67-48 victory over Hampton in the season opener Friday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Chicago's Big Ten Team had a balanced offense with Nia Coffey, Ashley Deary, Lydia Rohde and Lauren Douglas all scoring in double-figures. Christen Inman added nine points of her own.
Coffey opened her 2016-17 campaign with a 14-point, 15-rebound performance. It was her 41st career double-double and the 51st straight game in which she has reached double digit points. Coffey added three blocks and a game-high six assists as well.
Rohde scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Playing in her first career game as a Wildcat, Oceana Hamilton put up a strong all-around effort with six points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Freshmen Abbie Wolf, Abi Scheid and Byrdy Galernik all made their collegiate debuts in the season opener. Galernik, running the point for most of the time she was in, registered four rebounds and four assists in ten minutes.
Hampton got off to an early 18-10 lead after the first quarter, but Northwestern stormed back in the second quarter. Christen Inman connected on four of her five field goals to start a 17-4 run that put Northwestern in front 27-22 at the half.
The 'Cats extended their lead to 44-31 after three quarters behind a pair of three-pointers from Rohde.
The floodgates broke open in the final frame as the offense surged past the Pirates' press to the tune of 21 points. Lauren Douglas scored six, and Coffey dished out five assists.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Oral Roberts at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
