10/6/2016 9:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Kassidy Gorman's golden goal sparked Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, as Northwestern downed the Michigan State Spartans 1-0 in extra time.
Gorman's fourth goal of the season came in the fourth minute of overtime, and Lauren Clem registered her NCAA-leading tenth clean sheet of the season.
The win moves the Wildcats to 11-1-1 (4-1-1 B1G), as the Spartans fall to 5-7-1 (2-4-0 B1G).
With a majority of the action happening in the midfield, it was a tight game with just three total shots in 17 minutes. While Northwestern saw the majority of possession, the Spartan defense held resolute, allowing just four shots. Michelle Chernesky almost opened scoring in the 28th minute, as her 30-yard screamer towards the top corner forced a sprawling save.
The game burst to life in the second half. Chernesky again rifled a 30-yarder on frame in the 48th-minute, but again was met with a save. Gorman sprung through for a one-on-one with the keeper in the 59th-minute, but a kick save kept the game even. Northwestern dominated the frame, outshooting MSU 11-5 in the half as it pursued a winner.
Overtime started the same as the second half, with Northwestern laying siege to the goal. Just four minutes in, Marisa Viggiano curled in a corner, and after the ball bounced around the top of the box, Maddy Lucas tapped the ball to Gorman, who found the back of the net to give Northwestern the 1-0 win.
