WINNETKA, Illinois – Northwestern head women's golf coach Emily Fletcher will be honored Thursday (Oct. 6) by the Women's Western Golf Association (WWGA) with their 2016 'Woman of Distinction Award'.
"I am overwhelmed with the news of being recognized as the 2016 honoree," said Fletcher. "My ties to Glen View Club and the many members who are affiliated with the WWGA have made me aware of the tireless and significant work this organization continues to do on behalf of women golfers. It is a tremendous privilege to be associated with the likes of Patty Berg, Louise Suggs, Nancy Lopez, Peggy Kirk Bell, Kathy Whitworth and all the others who have received this esteemed honor. I will continue to try to live up the standard they have set in promoting golf and developing a passion for this sport."

Since joining Northwestern in the spring of 2008, Fletcher has built the women's golf program into a powerhouse. The Wildcats have won three of the last four Big Ten titles and earned the program's best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships in each of the last four seasons. The 'Cats have had five All-Big Ten honorees each of the last two years, made up fully half (4) of the 2016 All-Big Ten First Team, and have earned 13 Academic All-Big Ten honors over the last three years.
In recognition of her work, Fletcher has been recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year four times in the last six years, and was selected as the 2016 WGCA Central Region Coach of the Year.
"As a parent and Director of the WWGA who has seen junior golf grow and provide young women an opportunity to compete in college, Emily is the coach I would entrust to mentor my daughters on and off the golf course," said WWGA President Kim Schriver. "She exemplifies the values, discipline and character that will grow the game and positively influence young women."
First presented to Patty Berg in 1994, the award has been presented over the last 22 years to women who have displayed leadership qualities and commitment to the game and have made significant contributions to the Association and the game of golf.
The WWGA was founded in 1901 under the sponsorship of the Western Golf Association and is one of, if not the oldest, women's golf organization in the United States, and conducts two tournaments annually. The Amateur Championship has been held without interruption since 1901, while the Junior Championship was first hosted in 1920 and has been contested annually with the exception of a few years during World War II.
