No. 23 NU Earns Program-Record 13th Shutout Against No. 13 Minnesota
10/22/2016 9:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 23 Northwestern battled No. 13 Minnesota to a scoreless double-overtime draw on Senior Night at Martin Stadium on Saturday and moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Big Ten.
The Wildcats notched their 13th shutout this season to set the program record for single-season shutouts, breaking last season's mark of 12.
Junior Lauren Clem collected her program-best 35th career shutout, and made four saves over 110 minutes.
The 23rd-ranked Wildcats moved to 13-1-3 on the season and are tied at the top of the Big Ten standings alongside Minnesota and Penn State with 21 points.
Northwestern honored its eight seniors before the game. Kaitlin Moore, Nandi Mehta, Margo McGinty, Rachel Zampa, Kourtney Scott, Maria Grygleski, Jenna Hascher, and Mary Erikson were all recognized for their hard work and contribution to the program.
The 'Cats started the game full of energy and dominated the early stages. Minnesota had a chance in the 16th minute but fired over the bar, and freshman Maddy Lucas forced Minnesota goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs into a tough low save in the 38th minute.
The pressure turned up in the second half, but both teams were playing stingy and physical defense. Chicago's Big Ten Team had the best two chances with a free-kick scrum in the box in the 67th minute and a breakaway from junior Kassidy Gorman in the 86th minute that was forced out for a corner.
Northwestern took total control in the two overtime periods as it searched for a golden goal, but it could not find a breakthrough. The intensity at Martin Stadium could be felt until the referee finally blew the whistle after double overtime.
The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday when they host Illinois at 7:30 at Martin Stadium. The 'Cats are guaranteed a share of the Big Ten regular season title with a win, and can take the title outright with a win and losses from Minnesota and Penn State.
