COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern had a strong showing in the first round of the main draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday at Ohio State.

The main singles and doubles draws started yesterday with the Round of 64 after qualifying matches on Thursday.

Freshman Chris Ephron was the only Wildcat to compete on day one, having to qualify for the main event. Ephron fought his way through his three qualifying matches, defeating Niko Wasilewicz of UIC, 6-3, 6-4, Miles McDowall of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 6-2, 6-0, and Eric Olivarez of Western Michigan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Ephron could not keep his momentum rolling on Friday and fell to No. 16 seed Matt Mendez of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-3.

Senior Konrad Zieba, the No. 1 singles seed, took care of business and defeated Patryk Koscielski from Detroit-Mercy, 6-2, 7-6.

No. 2 singles seed Strong Kirchheimer finished off in-state foe Nathan de Veer from DePaul with ease, 6-0, 6-2.

Freshman Dominik Starý, the No. 13 singles seed, took down Christoffer Greve from Illinois State, 6-0, 7-5.

Sophomore Michael Lorenzini pulled off the upset of the day by beating Big Ten foe and No. 5 seed Jathan Malik from Michigan with two tiebreaks, 7-6, 7-6. Malik is ranked No. 84 nationally and played No. 2 singles last season for Michigan.

Freshman Brenden Volk and sophomore Jason Seidman both fell in their first round matches. Volk was downed by No. 10 seed Kyle Seelig from Ohio State in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Seidman fell to Maik Steiner of Western Michigan in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

All three Northwestern doubles teams will participate in the round of 32 on Saturday. The eighth seeded doubles team of Kirchheimer and Volk defeated Greg Anderson and Luke Smrek of Marqutte, 8-4, while Lorenzini and Ephron defeated Mirko Radosevic and Benjamin Slade of Cleveland State, 8-3. Fifth-seeded doubles pairing Zieba and Starý had a first round bye.

Round of 32 action continues all day Saturday.
