EVANSTON, Ill. – Ashley Deary scored a career high 28 points and dished out 10 assists four her fourth double-double of the season, but Northwestern fell to Indiana 91-84 on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The junior point guard finished three rebounds shy of a triple-double in a career performance against the Hoosiers.
"Really tough game. A lot of swings of momentum, a lot of runs and unfortunately, Indiana had the last one," head coach Joe McKeown said. "That was the difference in the game."
Both teams set a scorching pace in the early going. Junior Nia Coffey reached double-figures before halftime, marking the 35-straight game in which the Minneapolis native has scored at least ten points.
She would finish the afternoon with 27 points and 11 rebounds, tallying her 10th double-double in what has been a stellar season for the junior forward.
Despite some hot-shooting from the Hoosiers to begin the contest, Northwestern hung tough thanks to impressive performances from Deary and Maggie Lyon. The Wildcats looked to Deary to create second chance opportunities, as the point guard collected four offensive rebounds in a game where she constantly attacked the rim.
"The past four games have been a little rough. I've kind of had some ups and downs with turnovers," Deary said. "I'm just finding my rhythm in Big Ten play. Today was just all in for me and for us as a team."
Deary put on an offensive showcase against Indiana, finding ways to score from all over the court. She knocked down a couple huge threes in the third quarter to give Northwestern its first lead of the second half. For the game, Deary shot a blistering 61 percent (10-17) from the field.
Both teams exchanged leads in the second half before the Hoosiers pulled away in the final minute. The loss dropped Northwestern to 13-7 (2-6 B1G) on the season.
"In the Big Ten, we play an 18-game schedule and a tournament, so we have a lot of games left," McKeown said.
The Wildcats are back in action this Thursday, when they head to Columbus for another conference clash with Ohio State. Northwestern beat the then fifth-ranked Buckeyes, 86-82, on Jan. 14. Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena next Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
