EVANSTON, Ill. – A school-record 82 Northwestern student-athletes from 14 different varsity programs have earned prestigious Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the conference announced Wednesday.
Â
The award, in its eighth year of existence, was established by the Big Ten Faculty Representatives to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, this award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
Â
The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career. In 2015-16, Northwestern earned a school-record 232 total Academic All-Big Ten honors to put it over the 200 mark for the sixth consecutive year.
Â
This year's total of 82 Distinguished Scholar recipients easily establishes a new Northwestern high, topping the previous school best of 57 honorees during the 2013-14 academic year.
Â
"Our student-athletes have had an exemplary year in the classroom, capped by these school-record 80 individuals earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar distinction," Northwestern vice president for athletics and recreation Jim Phillips said. "All told, a school-record 232 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, an overall GPA of 3.32, 12 NCAA Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition awards and a Big Ten-leading 97 percent Graduation Success Rate combined to make 2015-16 a tremendous year and shows the commitment of our student-athletes, coaches and staff to the complete collegiate experience.
Â
"The entire Northwestern community is extremely proud of all their accomplishments and efforts."
Â
Six Wildcats -- fencing's Julia Abelsky, Mikela Goldstein, Lucia Procopio and Jen Yamin, women's soccer's Nandi Mehta, and volleyball's Kayla Morin -- received special recognition for earning perfect 4.0 GPAs over the past year.
