Recognized as a second-team All-American a year ago, the Dublin, Ireland, native helped lead the Wildcats to their first Big Ten tournament title in school history and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2014. Take a few moments to get to know Lisa McCarthy.
Why did you choose to attend Northwestern?
The strong academics, campus and Chicago were all very attractive aspects of Northwestern. But above all, after meeting the team and athletics staff, I immediately felt at home here. It was a perfect match for me!
What's your favorite part of being a member of the Northwestern field hockey team?
My teammates and coaches. There's never a dull moment with them, win or lose, we always manage to find something to be jolly about.
How is field hockey in the United States different from the game in Europe?
Field hockey in the States is far more professional. It allows players to compete at an almost professional level which is virtually impossible in Europe.
Tell us about your internship this summer.
I was lucky to complete an incredible internship at an investment bank in Chicago this summer. It was wonderful to experience how a global firm works to maintain its performance and reputation. I learned a lot about the working world and myself.
What are your career aspirations following graduation?
That's a tough one. I'm playing around with some ideas but I'm not too sure. It's my final season and we're an ambitious team so that's to the front of my head right now.
What is one thing that most people might not know about you?
Hmm...I play guitar but that's no longer a secret. I also played cricket as a kid. It's a fun sport.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to explore and check out places to eat around Chicago. There's an endless supply of restaurants to try.
What do you miss the most about Ireland?
I miss my family and friends and I love when they visit. I also miss the small town near my house and the little shops in my area.
Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
Not really. Maybe applying suncream, I guess that's a ritual!
If you could meet with anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
Recently I've been loving Amy Schumer. She's hilarious and doesn't take herself too seriously. I think she'd be pretty funny to meet.
